Rigorous Curriculum
We believe that a rigorous curriculum is essential to modern learning. J.O. Combs' curriculum is intentionally aligned to the Arizona Academic Standards with clear learning outcomes, aligned assessments, and the necessary learning experiences and instructional strategies identified to achieve our desired outcomes for student learning. Curriculim Maps have been developed which provide the learning roadmap for our students and allow support transparency of learning for all.

District Core Curriculum Resources
Core resources are comprehensive materials that support instruction for a course’s full curriculum and are provided for all students.
English Language Arts
Spalding | Spalding combines an educational philosophy with a methodology consisting of time-tested principles of learning and instruction that are applied across the curricula.
K-3 Fundations | A systematic and explicit phonics program that focuses on letter formation, phonological and phonemic awareness, sound mastery, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.
K-5 ReadyGen | An integrated literacy program focused on reading, writing, speaking, and listening and designed to get students ready for college and careers. It is built on a collaborative learning model in which teachers and students work together throughout the instructional process to grow students’ understanding and expand their knowledge.
6-12 myPerspectives | A student-centered English Language Arts program that honors student choice and voice as students respond to activities using their own experiences, perform research in response to a prompt or task that they choose, and complete project based tasks in a format of their choosing.
K-8 Write from the Beginning and Beyond | A developmental, vertically aligned writing program that focuses on early and continuous training for essential criteria necessary for successful writing achievement throughout and beyond the school years.
Mathematics
K-11 enVision | A mathematics curriculum that focuses on deep conceptual math understanding aided by visual models, personalized learning, and 3-act tasks. Family Engagement resources provide essential information for families to use in supporting their students at home. Comprehensive vertical alignment from Kindergarten through Algebra 2 helps schools address mathematical standards in the most effective way.
Science
Inspire Science K-12 | A science curriculum that sparks students’ curiosity through fascinating real-world phenomena. Students investigate, problem-solve, argue, and discuss scientific phenomena to make sense of the world from their perspective. The experience is organized around the 5E Instructional Framework. The compelling resources housed in this familiar framework empower educators to provide science experiences for all learners through flexible approaches and research-based best practices.

English Language Arts
DreamBox Reading Park (K-2) | DreamBox Reading Park by Discovery Education provides students in K–2 with adaptive, personalized, and engaging foundational reading instruction. The motivating program helps students build skills and become lifelong readers.
DreamBox Reading Plus (3-8) | DreamBox Reading Plus by Discovery Education is an evidence-based, online program that accelerates learning by providing personalized instruction and intervention for students in grades 3-12. It can improve reading proficiency by 2.5 grade levels in a single school year.
K-3 Heggerty | Innovative, evidence-based curricula designed to cultivate confident, capable readers and writers through explicit phonemic awareness lessons.

K-3 Fundations Interventions | A systematic and explicit phonics program that focuses on letter formation, phonological and phonemic awareness, sound mastery, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Interventions are done in a small group setting with the classroom teacher.
2-12 Wilson Language Systems | An intensive reading program designed to support students learning to read in a small group setting. Reading specialists and Resource teachers implement this intervention.
K-8 FastBridge | Teacher-delivered instruction in an asynchronous setting, aligned to results of district administered screeners.
Just Words | Tier 2 intervention system that is a sophisticated study of word structure with explicit teaching of “how English works” for decoding and spelling automaticity.
6 Minute Solution | A program that promotes fluency in reading using a short 6 step process to be used daily.
Rewards | Series of short-term reading and writing intervention solutions that provide strategies for reading long, multisyllabic words to improve comprehension and fluency, giving students the tools to access grade-level content.
Math
K-8 DreamBox | An intelligently adaptive program designed to ensure students, at every level, stay motivated and receive the right instruction at the right time, from day one. DreamBox tracks each student's interaction and evaluates their strategies, then immediately adjusts the lesson and prompts, so every student can progress at the pace and on the instructional path that’s right for them.
7-12 DeltaMath PLUS | Standards-aligned, online learning modules containing instructional videos, adaptive practice, and assessment features.
K-8 FastBridge | Teacher-delivered instruction in an asynchronous setting, aligned to results of district administered screeners.

District Textbook/Supplemental Resource Adoption Review
Per the J.O. Combs Unified School District Board Policy IIJ, textbooks and supplementary books for common schools recommended by textbook selection committees will be placed on display in the district office for a period of at least sixty (60) days prior to the meeting at which the Board will consider their adoption. Textbooks for high schools recommended by textbook selection committees will be place on display in the district office for a period of at least sixty (60) days prior to the meeting at which the Board will consider their adoption. Information related to high school textbooks, which are proposed for approval, shall be placed on the district website.
